In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.
Eddington is Ari Aster's most stressful film, but I couldn't look away
Eddington isn't Ari Aster's strangest movie (that's still Beau Is Afraid), but it's probably his most uncomfortable. Taking place in small town New Mexico in 2020, it deals with recent history—think Covid restrictions, BLM protests, the never-ending doom scroll—like vinegar in an open wound. If you're looking for something to sooth those anxieties, I suggest you avoid it, but if the thought of stoking them sounds weirdly interesting, this might just be the movie for you. Eddington is cruel, dark, and unsatisfying, but Aster is a master at getting under your skin. I can't wait to see it again!
